MILES HILLMANN
Miles Hillmann is a lifelong agricultural innovator whose global career spans research, entrepreneurship, and environmental leadership. Inspired by a renewed passion for genetic science, he wrote this book to spotlight the unsung heroes transforming our food future — the Super-Seeders.
From the Field to the Future
Miles Hillmann is a lifelong entrepreneur with a career that bridges scientific curiosity and hands-on innovation. From his early work at the Kabanyolo Agricultural Research Station in Uganda during Idi Amin’s fall, to experiencing food shortage and famine in the Ethiopian Central Highlands. His work encompassed everything from agricultural development, to establishing food-for-work projects, providing grain in exchange for labour on flash flood irrigation systems. The importance of food security was indelibly imprinted on his mind.
He later pioneered real-time feed analysis in the UK and created one of the UK’s major environmental control companies exporting to Europe, Nigeria and the Middle East. Throughout, a passion for agricultural science — especially the potential of genetic advances — remained a quiet thread.
That thread was reawakened when his old friend Geoff Hawtin won the 2024 World Food Prize. Geoff’s lifelong mission to conserve genetic diversity through global gene banks inspired Miles to investigate the remarkable, largely hidden revolution now transforming plant genetics — and its potential to reshape food security in the developing world.
This book is not his story. It is the story of the scientists, curators, and plant breeders leading this movement — told in their voices, through his lens. This is the story of the Super-Seeders.
"This Isn’t About Me. It’s About a Global Alliance."
The Super-Seeders is not Miles’ story. It’s the story of the quiet heroes behind a global, collaborative effort to conserve plant biodiversity, improve food resilience, and adapt agriculture to a changing world.
What he uncovered wasn’t a miracle breakthrough or a single brilliant discovery. It was a coordinated system — the Seven Pillars — built on decades of work by thousands of people across continents.
His mission is to bring those stories to light, not for applause, but because understanding the system is the first step toward protecting it. If the world is to face the challenges of food security, climate change, and biodiversity loss, these stories matter — and the systems behind them must endure.
A Life in Agriculture
From the highlands of East Africa to the laboratories of Norfolk, Miles Hillmann’s journey through agriculture spans five decades, three continents, and countless systems.
Though not a scientist by training, his work has always centred on food, land, and the people who depend on them. The path that led to The Super-Seeders is less about career — and more about lifelong curiosity and quiet conviction.
1970s – Uganda
Worked at the Kabanyolo Agricultural Research Station under Idi Amin’s regime. It was here, amid instability, that Miles first saw how politics, science, and food systems collide.
1980s – Ethiopia
Supported livestock improvement projects in Ethiopia, navigating dramatic change during the fall of Haile Selassie. It shaped his understanding of food systems as both biological and political.
UK & Europe – Innovation and Export
Founded a company pioneering real-time feed analysis and later led one of the UK’s major environmental control firms, exporting flood and spill response systems to the Middle East and Europe.
2024 – The Spark
After reconnecting with Geoff Hawtin, winner of the 2024 World Food Prize, Miles began exploring the quiet revolution underway in global plant genetics — and realised it was a story that needed telling.
2024 Onwards – Research and Writing
Through interviews with scientists, breeders, policy leaders, and farmers, Miles traced the emergence of seven global breakthroughs – the Seven Pillars – that now form the heart of The Super-Seeders.
